Rushdie is an Indian-American author and one of the best examples of the style sometimes referred to as “magical realism.” In 1989, the former leader of Iran Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwah condemning Rushdie to death because of his book Satanic Verses. Rushdie went into hiding and wrote Haroun and the Sea of Stories, which was published in 1990. The book has a strong allegorical meaning but the language and narrative are so lively that the deep insights never overwhelm the storytelling.
